Pillars of Creation
An improvisation with no talking, about ten minutes at the piano. It begins softly on C, with a low C held under the notes of a C major chord (C, E and G).
Then it climbs from key to key, each new key a fourth above the last, as F is above C. It goes from C to F, then B flat, then E flat.
The playing grows fuller and stronger as it goes. It passes through F minor and G minor, and from about eight minutes it settles in D flat major, mostly on the black keys, its loudest stretch, with big chords across the whole keyboard.
Near the end, D flat major chords move to G flat major. It ends by climbing the keyboard on two notes six half steps apart, F sharp and C, and closes on a low C and a high C struck together, the note it began on.
The chord names and the staff on screen show each chord as it sounds.
